Polar Bears at RiskBy Carole HerdegenDo you know about ANWR, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska? The refuge is one of the largest remaining pristine areas on earth and the prime denning area for the polar bears in Alaska. Anyone can become pro-active and help prevent passage of the proposed congressional bill to begin oil exploration. What will be lost will be lost forever. Concerned parties are encouraged to join the Defenders of Wildlife organization to help protect wildlife and its habitat. DENLines environmental updates can also be received by clicking on www.defenders.org. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt established the system of National Wildlife Refuges. For over a hundred years these special places have been preserved for us and for future generations. I suggest watching the video about saving all our national refuges at www.saverefuges.org Parents should get their children involved in learning about the Arctic tundra. I reviewed a wonderful book, The Frozen Tundra, A Web of Life by Peter Johansson. Read this book review in the Kids Corner section of TravelSITE. « Back to Carole's Chronicles |
