Explore the Arctic at the Detroit Zoo

By Carole Herdegen

Zoo If you live in or near Detroit, you have a great opportunity to visit the amazing Arctic Ring of Life at the Detroit Zoo. The exhibit is the world's largest and most unique polar bear exhibit with the only underwater "polar passage". The passage is a spectacular 70-foot-long, twelve- foot wide and eight foot high transparent tunnel. It winds through a vast underwater marine environment that takes visitors below diving and swimming polar bears and seals. A see-through barrier giving the appearance that they are both sharing one aquatic environment separates the bears and seals.

Another reason for visiting the Zoo this spring and summer is to see the first polar bear cub born there in 15 years. The gender of the cub will not be known until its first physical exam scheduled for next month. There is a wonderful video clip of the mother and cub on the zoo's web site at www.detroitzoo.org. Click on NEW POLAR BEAR CUB MOVIE. The cub is having its first taste of snow.

The Detroit Zoo is located at the intersection of Ten Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, just off I-696 in Royal Oak. Admission is $10.50 for adults 13 to 62; $8.50 for senior citizens 62 and older and $6.50 for students ages 2 to 12; and children under two are free. Starting April 1st the zoo will be open daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. For more information call (248) 398-0900 or visit the web site at www.detroitzoo.org.
