Especially since I have personally visited their migratory sanctuaries in Nebraska, I found Michael Forsberg's book about the Sandhill Cranes of North America, "On Ancient Wings", to be the "frosting on the cake". In fact, not only would I recommend Michael's book as a coffee table MUST for all bird lovers, I doubt if I could assemble a sufficient number of superlatives to adequately endorse his factual masterpiece.

While most books comprise paper, ink, words and photography, "On Ancient Wings" is definitely a product of love. Of course, research, patience and devotion are also required ingredients; however, Michael's absolute admiration of and dedication to his subjects, the Sandhill Cranes, emerges from every page. The history is fascinating, the facts are mind-boggling and the photography is simply incomparable. In my opinion, only a reincarnated Sandhill Crane could contribute more knowledge than Michael has amassed about this fascinating bird, one of only two species of cranes in North America.

In addition to his absolutely outstanding photographs of the cranes in all sorts of environments, the authority of the book is ever present in Michael's actual experiencing all of the aspects in the life of this amazing bird. Amazing as well is that in my many years of national and international travels, the migration story of this ancient bird has until now escaped me. Therefore, I enthusiastically advise all nature lovers to acquaint themselves with "On Ancient Wings" so they too can enjoy one of the most interesting chapters in the life of migratory birds.
