Anyone planning to explore our United States, especially by vehicle, should definitely have in their library the American Byways Series, a collection of four books devoted to: All-American Roads, The Mountain Region, The Midwest and The West Coast. Each book is easy to read, well organized and contains all the information an average traveler would expect. And, I found it amazing how so much interesting data could be compressed into so few pages.
Book #1 All American Roads is exactly as its title states, identifying highlights to be experienced in each of our 50 States. One can quickly learn about a specific State's history, scenic areas, things to see, places to stay and even places to eat.
Book #2 American Byways of the Midwest is devoted to the States of: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Each of these States is famous for one or more scenic byways. For example, in Ohio, there are details about the Amish Country Byway, The Canal Way Ohio Scenic Byway and the Historical National Road. In South Dakota, details are presented about The Native American Scenic Byway and the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. Once again, the reader is equipped with an arsenal of necessary information such as the length of the specific roads, the amount of time one should allow to travel them and, of course, things to see, lodging and dining locations.
Book #3 American Byways of the MOUNTAIN REGION provides the reader with exactly that - the interesting features and scenic byways of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Of course, when visiting New Mexico, the byway not to be missed is the famous Santa Fe Trail. The reader quickly learns the trail is 381 miles long, it takes approximately 8 hours to drive and the best time of the year to do so is from early spring through late fall.
Book #4 American Byways of the West Coast provides the reader with comparable information on Alaska, California, Oregon and Washington. Just to wet your appetite about what byways are in store for the visitor to Oregon, the book contains clear and detailed information about the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, Historic Columbia River Highway, McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway, Outback Scenic Byway, Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway and the West Cascades Scenic Byway. Can you believe that adds up to more than 1,500 spectacular miles of scenic beauty in only one of our States?
The Series is produced by the National Scenic Byways Program in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation, The Federal Highway Commission and is an official Mobil Travel Guide. It may be ordered here on our TravelSITE homepage. Simply click on TravelSTORE.
