Children's Travel Book ReviewsDolphins in DangerAdventures of Riley Seriesby Amanda Lumry & Laura Hurwitz Illustrations by: Sarah McIntyre Published by: Eaglemont Press, Bellevue, WA Reviewed by Carole Herdegen Dolphins in Danger is my introduction to the Adventures of Riley series of books. I was initially impressed that the Smithsonian Institution, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the World Wildlife Fund endorse these books. In fact, portions from the sales proceeds of these books go in part to support all three organizations. The illustrations by Sarah McIntyre are clearly for attracting the attention of youngsters and are exceptionally complementary to the storyline of the authors. In fact, the authors provide such a high degree of education and authenticity; these "illustrated textbooks" will captivate both teacher and audience. In this regard, Dolphins in Danger is a superb educational tool and not simply an entertaining story. Clearly the contents will trigger curiosity that is then rewarded with answers and explanation. The storyline is consistent with a message that leads to a conclusion. The journey towards that conclusion is packed with ancillary bits and pieces of learning such as: the esoteric names of people, their tools, ethnic foods or the other animals that share the oceanic environment of the dolphins. There is no question this book coveys a great deal of education, information and knowledge for student audiences. In fact, as a former teacher, I felt almost compelled to now prepare a test on what I had just read. I would seriously recommend this book and the others in the Adventures of Riley series to be a tutorial for any teacher or parent interested in exposing children to the actual and factual situations being faced by nature, the environment and its inhabitants.
