The Great Escape 2004By Carole Herdegen Spain, and particularly its southern portion, was conquered in 800 AD by the Muslims who were called Moors by the Spaniards. They populated Spain for nearly 700 years. We experienced the architectural beauty of Alhambra in Granada. This was the same Islamic style of buildings and mosques we saw only a few days earlier in the north African country of Morocco. Gibraltar is a British Crown Colony. It connects to the Spanish mainland by a sandy isthmus. Its strategic location was most important because it guarded the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. The Rock of Gibraltar has been British since 1704 but has become more popular over the years for its tourism. Portugal is one of the oldest countries of Europe. Its importance came about from its geographic location on the Atlantic Ocean. It was not surprising that this seafaring nation remained a leader in the golden age of discovery for two centuries.
