The Russian Government offered to sell Alaska to the United States in 1866. Russia and Secretary of State William H. Seward worked out a treaty under which the US would purchase Alaska for $7.2 million in gold.

This deal became known as Seward’s Folly and was not recognized as a valuable addition to American territory until the Klondike gold strike of 1896.
